What is a PFT?
A pulmonary function test (PFT) checks how well your lungs work.
In spirometry — the most common PFT — you breathe out forcefully into a mouthpiece connected to a machine that measures how much air your lungs can hold and how quickly you can breathe it out. The test is non-invasive and helps doctors detect and monitor conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
